Not quite a standard quartermaster piece..but I see nothing wrong for a lightweight private purchase piece.. also the gentleman selling this has educated himself well in military headgear.. JMHO Billbert

        Sweat Diamond

Is it common for this makers sweat diamond to degrade like this example?

It is not cello. I have seen a few odd diamonds in my time. On a crusher before too.

If its not cello, which I agree, what can it possibly be? Just curious.

My guess is oilcloth like US caps. It may have not been made in Germany proper.

Looks like the sweatdiamond has "carmelized" ( a term we use for those USAAF crushers--they don't age well.)

                Nice one, Ben...

It is a "rubberized " material that is found in crushers. It would be more suspect if it hadn't "carmelized".
Really nice looking example of a tough cap

                    Sweat Diamond

Here's an example of that material in a U.S. hat. I didn't know it was used in German hats. Interesting!

I have also seen period caps with a paper type diamond with no clear coat over it.

                        Crush Caps

One would think that the Germans would have adopted this material for use in all crush caps. It seems to be made for crushing. A natural if you will.

Given Ben's restoration skills how do we know he didn't make this from salvaged and dyed American service caps? Maybe he is the ultimate Dr Frankestein? Ha ha...just couldn't resist Ben, what a sweet cap.

Not the standard type that I have seen (I own two), but it looks like a nice walking-out privately purchased cap specifically designed to catch the eye of impressionable frauleins. Very good price as well.

It should be noted that this desirable type of cap does not come up that often -- I had to beat back the hordes to get mine from John Donovan nearly five years ago. I haven't seen an infantry crusher on estand since, until now.
