This thread just keeps getting better and better.
I have noted what Ben has shared about the Russian capture stamps and thank him again for some good work. Very interesting to say the least but not fully conclusive. I mean when where the stamps applied ??? and by who ???
My example has no Russian capture marks at all and the eagle on my one is factory applied in the correct style for Carl Halfar where as every time I see one with an SS/ WH trap or SS badges they are hand applied which again could have been done at any time.
Not dismissing what Ben has stated but I just do not feel that the Russian stamps have been proved beyond a doubt. I have seen a perfectly good Statni cap with that Russian capture mark in it. The stamp may be wrong but the cap was not.
Those are two interesting caps that Richard has posted and yes he is right, another version of the Carl Halfar stamp. A minor variation which seems to be what Halfar did. If they are reproduction caps then you would think that the faker would have the decency to be consistent. The more I see of these caps the more I like them but I bet a few reading this are saying the opposite.
Now what about Franesco's SS side cap ??? Another possible Carl Halfar field cap to study and guess what Halfar type materials exterior and interior for a Panzer version. Makes one wonder if the sidecap which Jacques posted (numbers 170 & 171) may in fact have possibilities although I do suspect that the badges on Jacques's example have been reapplied (and lets not forget also about my LW shoulder board with that type of lining material).
I agree we are starting to see quite a few examples of these "soft T- shirt" lined Carl Halfar caps but I again ask if these are not the real deal then where are all the real caps Halfar made ??? I mean 2 factories of good size and large capacity (one at Berlin, one at Genesen) plus a cottage industry of suppliers. The real deal field caps have to be some where after all they were a cap factory were they not ? If these are fakes then where are the real ones ? There do not seem to be that many late war visors by Halfar out so there has to be some field caps they made some where. The demand for tropical examples was off the boil by late 1943 and sidecaps were no longer as popular so they must of had to make some M43's. After all the Berlin factory pretty well survived the war in tact producing right up to 1945 and was up and running again after the war in no time.
Show me an unquestionable real M43 by Carl Halfar which is different or better/ more original than mine. Gets us all thinking does it not,
Chris
