Nick, the wool IMO is not Italian but I could be wrong. The date is definitely1942 and I understand the M43 caps were first produced in late 42 but not fully in production until 1943. I have seen and heard of a few dated in 42. Unusual I agree. I got this from a very well respected member of our forum who specializes in cloth headgear so I feel great about the info I received about it. The marking is P42 and I was told Posen is the maker. Anyone ever heard of a maker by that name? Thanks for your info and I appreciate your comments. Mike.

Italy surrendered in September 1943 when their material became available during the German occupation...
This M43 pattern could not have a 1942 date if its Italian wool and the style of hat was introduced in 1943. Isn't the date 1943?
    Nice hat otherwise!
BTW Posen is a city in (occupied) Poland, not a maker name.

Daniele, thanks for your kind words. The cap is a great one even with the re-applied insignia. Mike.

hi nick actually the color leans more towards green and its not italian wool it's (tricotine) almost behaves like a knit on the underside and is definetally marked "42" i have had a few over the years with a late "42" date the cap features all the goodies you would want in an original cap ,and yes P-Posen would be the depot stamp OF NOTE: the nice pinched look it has and retains the shape a salty cap with a been there look

Give a man an opinion and you feed him for a day,
teach a man to use the "search" function on the WAF and you feed him for a lifetime.

Yeah it looked Italian based on the lighting (at least to me) anyway congrats on an early M43,
which is 1942 dated stamped, which is indeed possible! Good score!
