Good summary of the thread so far Rick C. thanks.

Another question: were all factory applied soutaches attached in the manner where they went thru a small hole in the bottom front of the hat? Did hant applied soutaches typicall omit this technique?

The second from the right is pionier (black).

I would be very suspicious of an M34 cap that had the soutache applied in such a way that it wrapped around the bottom of the cap. For starters, that is not how they were supposed to look - why go to the trouble of doing it, only to do it wrong? Second, I don't think soutache material was easy to get, so why apply it in a way that will cause it to wear out more quickly (ie: wrapped under instead of tucked in). The cap below illustrates both points very nicely. It is a an officer M38 and he wanted a golden yellow soutache so bad he had to braid one himself! Notice he took the time to tuck the ends in properly! (photo credit: 'Uniforms of the Panzer Troops' - Hormann)

Here's one of my favorites... it's mothy and beat-up, but I think she looks good for being from the mid-1930's! This is the one that has Artillery Regiment property marks on the inside, and a hand applied non-standard soutache on the front. The owner cared a lot about his appearance, and also took the time to add the FORBIDDEN top stitch to make his hat look better! He also replaced the two closure stitches in front, which is unusual. Please note the FIRST PATTERN eagle and cockade... very early!!

            hello,

            a very interesting discussion,
thanks to all those who share their nice and rare items to "feed" it.

            a question for Richard P ;
            i'm not sure,
the color of the soutache on the black sidecap shown in #25 is pink, or copperbrown ?

            regards

                        Derka,

Those darn digital pics...it is copper brown. It actually came with my copperbrown piped wrapper thats pictured on another thread. It is one of the few factory piped panzer caps I have seen in that particular color. I know it is hard to tell in most photos and on different monitors. Here's a photo together, maybe that will help.

                            hello,

thanks for this nice and very clear comparizon pic, Richard.
                            i plenty agree with you,
copperbrown is one of the rarer waffenfarbe to find on black pz sidecap,
                            with black and white.
in fact, i'm looking for one since more than 15 years...

                            regards
