    I think you are right. The photos posted here certainly seem to indicate that there were originals with the 'open nose'.

      I don't have a Schirmutze to share but I do have this Officers Feldmutze that has intrigued me more several years now. I bought it at a Great Western gunshow around 16-17 years ago and the skull has allways puzzled me because it does not match any of the standard skulls I have seen in all the various books etc. What are your thoughts on this one?

          Gary--I have never seen that style before, but I wouldn't rule it out as being real. I think the only "standard" for IR 17 skulls was that the skull rest above the bones, while for the Danziger type, the only requirement was that the bones be behind the skull. I would leave yours as is.

            Thanks for your input. I really have very litttle experience with these traditions badges but find them very interesting. The quality on this one is quite good but as I said earlier it is different from all I have seen. Could it simply be a decorative badge for some other group or purpose that was added?
