Not that it carries weight, but Shea had one for sale on his site last month, which is now sold--did anyone capture pics of it?

In any event, period pics are taken from too far away to determine the detail of most skulls--here is one that is similar to the one on my first hat:

This is pictured in the DiFilippi French book, so these style skulls have been around longer than the last 5 years (the book was published in 1980).
This skull looks to be aluminum, however:

This is one on a hat owned by Jarkis--the hat doens't appear to have any extra holes.

The problem with these skulls is that they have not been catalogued like the SS skulls, and they aren't marked, either. The varieties seem to be endless--this one, from the Shutt book, has no nasal opening:

I forgot to mention that the detail due to the casting is lost. If you look at the ebay fakes, the femur lacks separation from the "ball"--ie, the "trailer-hitch" effect--this is another shot of mine:

For comparison, the cast fake lacks this feature:

I am always open to evidence to the contrary, but cast fakes on Ebay don't sway me that the "open nose" skulls are fakes.

We should start threads on all the variations of Dragoon Adlers, Brunswick & Danziger skulls, Edelwiesses and Crucifixes--its just that pulling the d**n things off runs the very real risk of losing a prong!

Very, very helpful seeing the pin locations on the back. Thanx! RC
