Thank you all very much for your replies. I think the consensus is unanimous on this one. Is the construction of the cap, especially the lack of the false piping, the biggest indicator that it's wrong?

Didn't take the hounds very long to sniff out the fox on this piece. Says a lot ... when you have a half dozen people all pile on saying it isn't good, that means it didn't take a lot of effort to analyze so it's not a very good reproduction. Questions started to form in my mind by the second photograph... when that happens it's time to turn your back and walk away from it. Get your money back!

Also I find the piping 'connection' unusual to be on the side of the cap (post #5).

Thanks for the detailed picture of the attachment method Dr. S. This forum is invaluable for people like me who've never held a real one of these in their hands before.

I think this cap has too many red flags for those who have comented here to ever consider it original, which is why I'm not hesitating in sending it back. The seller is shocked by the news, and says it came from a very respected collector. He has asked me to call him this weekend to discuss the cap, which I'll gladly do.

The Title

I titled my picture Clemens Wagner as that is the type of sidecap I prefer. They have a very tidy consistent method to the joining problem caused by this type of silver piping. It is certainly not the only method, but what I like on my hats in addition to a nice liittle stick of wood.
