Why do some have a strip of brown around the base, while on others the band wraps around the bottom with no base?

Arran, I believe the ones with no trim to the band are pre-RZM examples before standardization set in (mine has no RZM tag).

Early HJ caps are out of my knowledge, so what's your opinion about the tan fabric of the cap top please ?

No "trikot" nor wool cloth... Seems to be lightweight cotton fabric...
