Is it sized 52 or something? That could explain it looks so thick..

Anyway no warm feelings for me either. Save you'r money (imo)

I've just realised the frustration that new collectors must feel when they post here. Comments about warm feelings and read Gary's book are all very well but don't actualy mean anything when it comes down to it do they? (Yes, I'm guilty too!)

Let's start again. I know something about caps but I've not handled any General's sidecaps at all which is why I asked for opinions.

So, we've got a non Heer cut cap made from a good quality wool but a bit thick in some people's opinions, fair enough. I'm not sure if that's good or bad to be honest because it looks period to me no matter how thick it is.
Lining is rayon, as I'd expect and it's got a leather partial sweatband, also as I'd expect.
The eagle is IMHO an authentic beautiful gold bullion example and the cockade and piping look good too. The maker is known for making very up market custom tailored tunics. I'll find that thread again when I have time.

So, what specifically is wrong with this cap apart from it's the wrong cut? If it had SS insignia on it for instance, would it still be wrong?

Honest questions here guys, I'm not going to buy it now, I wouldn't take the risk based on the reactions so far and the limited knowledge I have with General's headgear. But, that's why I want to learn. Please PM me if you don't want to give away stuff to the fakers.

                Ben,

Interesting cap. As everyone has pointed out its not cut like your typical army cap. Of course most of the fake Generals OS caps I've seen, try to replicate textbook caps.

I've been going thru wartime pics of Generals to see if I can find one that matches yours. So far no luck. Heres one comparison with 4 caps. the bottom cap does appear to be made from a thicker material. I'll keep digging.WR Jim

                      Hello Ben,

I would venture to say this cap has a good chance at being genuine. I would also venture to say it is not an Army general, although they did have some leeway when having a cap made. I have seen a cap that greatly reminds me of this one, but this one far outshines it in quality of insignia. The other cap was a coast artillery officer with gold on green flatwire insignia and celleon piping with a yellow cotton soutache. I suppose a CA officer could order a cap with general quality insignia and it would look quite like this cap. It is also reasonable to assume it may be of admiral rank or higher. One point not in this favor is that the bullion cockade has a silver surround, a majority of general rank hats ( I have in hand or have personally seen) do have the gold wire surround. However I am sure this is not carved in stone. If you require any further top secret discussion, lest the fakers retool their fake generals cap assembly line, email me.

                        Sayle F,

Sorry...I almost forgot, killer early panzer general's sidecap. Not a very handsome head you have it posed on though. I recommend you get a head that is more lifelike and not made so much like your own.

I would suggest you protect yourself at the show in Pomona as you may find yourself with a very sore ARM

I don't like any of the General officer hat's posted here. When you see an unquestionable original it will reach out a slap you in the face. I know a few members here who have real ones.

                            Just my opinion.

                              Easy boys!

                              That's a stunning Panzer cap.

Wessel, thanks for the pics of your cap.

Jim, great pics, thanks for the effort. I did the same thing, searching through loads of period pics but couldn't find a match. The coastal artillery connection sounds plausible.
