thought it stood a chance, but I didn't like it in "Headgear" when I first saw it there years earlier. Then I saw it sold for 3K and I thought - oops somebody got dooped!

IMHO all 3 helmets are bad on pages 29-31. On the bright side, I like all of the helmet covers. On page 118, all four eagles are bad and at least two of the skulls from what I can see, and I really don't like the other two either. I won't go into the uniforms on this thread, but the collar tab on page 43, is clearly not the same one as shown in the period photo, although the tunic appears to be the same one.

The badges are bad on pages 10,11,15,16,17,21, and 23 at the very least.

I have to admit that a Janke 'Dalluge' is right at the brink of being unforgiveable though!

The current generation of reference books are large format with beautiful color photographs. Many new collectors are captivated by the photographs and don't have the knoweldge to know if what they are looking at is real or fake. I think this is particularly true when it comes to helmets.
How many of the authors know they are putting fake headgear in their reference books? If they do know, then don't they have a responsibilty to say it's a fake in their books and are just using it as a visual reference?
An interesting thread with the potential to be very educational. Even though I don't collect visor caps, I look forward to seeing where this thread goes. Thanks NTZ for starting it.

Let’s change books for a moment. Back to Moran & Maguire’s German Headgear Vol. 1. Pg. 138-139. The mountain troops crusher IMO is completely put together. It looks like it started life as a basic private purchase EM/NCO. The stitching that attaches the visor & sweatband is showing on the outside of the cap and poorly done along with very poorly applied insignia. At least the cap looks to be period but not a great reference as to what a crusher should look like. But then again who knows.
Come on guy where are the eagle eyes? I don’t know much about soft headgear but there must be a few out there.
I did do a once through Wilkin’s book and I must say very well done. I do have to disagree with the Erel section where he said you could find both army and SS visors with the Offizier’s Kleiderkasse markings though. I do think I remember reading somewhere that was an error.
