yes that sounds very constructive. It may also be a good idea to ask Wade the background and source of his cap. I'm always a bit alarmed when items are condemned when they appear not to be known text book examples. From a collectors point of view its always advisable to go for textbook examples however I think sometimes in the bigger picture good items are sometimes over looked using this theory which is a shame not only for the collector but for the preservation of history.
Hello Kenny, knowledge is not a static thing we are always learning. Authors of books face a big challenge because they hopefully do things in good faith or haste to meet a publishing dead-line only to learn at a later date in some cases that things may not be right. The great thing about those who publish is that they document knowledge which then preserves it for others to debate and build upon. This way knowledge is progressed.

The debate about these panzer eagles is healthy because they are ugly in more ways than one. I think in this case those who do not like them may well have good reason but as you say we must not be quick to jump to conclusions and investigate all possibilities fully. It is wrong when a real item of history is pronounced a fake but on the other hand we all have good reason to be very cautious in this game,

    Chris

I know he will no longer respond to this forum.
      Why not?

I'm looking forward to seeing the new book!

Here is some info on Perlon. From what I have been able to research socks are the only item of military clothing that used Perlon.

Perlon was used as fabric for high pressure hose in airplane tires, as stiff bristles for cleaning weapons, for cords and ropes for parachutes - but also for lady******180;s stockings as a Christmas present for the wives of I.G.-Farben managers in 1943 and as reinforcement in socks used by the German armed forces.
DATE INTRODUCED: Dr. Wallace H. Carothers (1896-1937) directed the research program which resulted in the discovery of nylon. Nylon first appeared on the United States market in the form of brush bristles and sewing thread, and in 1940 hose made of this yarn were available. In Germany a similar fiber called Perlon was developed in 1938.
          .
Perlon was invented In 1938 by the German chemist Dr. Paul Schlack (picture) at I.G.-Farben.

The first "Test stocking " was produced by the company LBO (Louis Bahner Oberlungwitz) in Stollberg in 1938 only a few months after its discovery. This invention was kept secret and declared as military defense material under the code name "Perluran".

Yes Chris, my question is why he he no longer responds to the forum. I think we can all benefit from the voices of experience.

Hello again Mike, well I certainly agree with you about the benefit of the forum and the experience base which is on it. My hope is that all collectors can find the time to have a look and be involved both experienced and new to the game. We do not all have to agree but to share opinions, thoughts and knowledge is important in more ways than one.

Wade however has not posted since June last year so if you refer back to that you will see he stated his reasons. The word down-under is that he still feels this way and has called it a day with this forum. I can not say any more and to offer an explanation why this has happened would only be speculation on my part so I will stop here.

Will be interested to know how you find his latest book when get to see it,

                  Chris

                    Hi Gary,

thanks for the further information on the synthetic material.Whats your gut feeling? Do you think it is possible that these materials were used to manufacture other items as well as socks and sewing kit thread?
