Many Afrika Korps POW's were held here in the US, which is no stranger to Russian-Front type weather (for example, Ft. Sheridan, IL which is north of Chicago and next to where I used to live).

I don't think these are POW's because, as pointed out, they weren't stripped of ammunition pouches. The man on the left also has some sort of field gear slung over his shoulder. The scene does however remind me of shots I've seen of the German general's surrender at Stalingrad. (was it General Paulus?)
The men in the foreground look to be too old to be regular enlisted men yet do not show officer insignia. As Ben pointed out, the soldier in the background appears to have an edelweiss on his hat and perhaps officer boards.
Because of the age of the men and the uniform configuration, I am leaning toward a volksturm call-up???Attached Files
