I would think a woolen/cloth hat will keep you warmer than a steel helmet.
I don't see any weapons anywhere, are these guys prisoners?
Or is that a train break in the back ground? maybe they are in transit.....

Many Afrika Korps POW's were held here in the US, which is no stranger to Russian-Front type weather (for example, Ft. Sheridan, IL which is north of Chicago and next to where I used to live).

The scene does however remind me of shots I've seen of the German general's surrender at Stalingrad. (was it General Paulus?)
The men in the foreground look to be too old to be regular enlisted men yet do not show officer insignia. As Ben pointed out, the soldier in the background appears to have an edelweiss on his hat and perhaps officer boards.
Because of the age of the men and the uniform configuration, I am leaning toward a volksturm call-up???Comment

Volkssturm would be my guess as well, but as Volkssturm goes, these guys are relatively well kitted out!

They are rear echelon at any rate, only receiving one ammunition pouch as opposed to a combat infantryman who would receive two..they do appear to be older men, as evidenced by the man on the extreme leftComment
