Hey Dave, sorry buddy, I did bid on this cap but no where near the 3800 it went for. I could only afford $2500. I had to leave it to the big dogs. Nice cap, could anyone explain why this color was used instead of just red or yellow for mot. recon? I was just curious because recon is yellow, so why a diff color for same branch.
I'm sure that there were lots of guys looking, cringing their teeth and hitting the 'send' button....
It's all good though as it confirms the rare nature of the cap!
I would think $3,800 to be cheap for an original of this item.
This is the first Recon piped headgear I have seen!!! And a crusher at that! Congrats. I am sure that this one will be the crown jewel of your collection!
I can only say three things…wonderful, wonderful, wonderful!
I was going to post my M38 officer overseas cap (field gray) with copper-brown piping in the "post-your-rarest-cap" thread, but this pales in comparison.
In answer to the question poised by Ahnenerbe: That's the reason this cap is so rare.
The copper-brown piping was only introduced in 1940 and used for a short time before being discontiued (due to its unpopularity in the field).
Rose pink or golden yellow were the colors commonly associated with armored reconnaissance, being used before the war, concurrenyl with the introduction of this color and until the end of the war.
