Revisiting this cap again! I got some info on it's origins...

Some background on the hat, I bought it at Excalibur Militaria in Paris in 1995 and have had it in my possession ever since.
So any ingenious new tricks that have come about since then... this pre-dates that.

I showed this LW tropical cap to George Petersen a few years ago and he thought it looked fine, we discussed where I got it
and his opinion was that it's likely from the cache of these caps found in Europe in 1993, that they were in good condition like this, etc.
Anyway, he had no concerns and since he is the LW tropical meister I took that as a good sign.

Just some more food for thought as GP is well known for having tracked down such items in the late 80's and early 90's...

          Hi,

Caravano and Johnson were known parisian crooks who used the good old tricks of "stocks found in 1945, stocks found after the fall of communism, stocks found in movie studios" etc.
          Kriegsmarine, LW, SS etc...
Just ask any dealer who knew them, you will get a large smile on their face if you ask them if they were involved in fakes...

So this cap is one of his fakes?

I only knew one of them and would see him at the large US shows. Had a great collection that was auctioned off in Germany a couple of years ago, but is quite known as a seller of many fakes. Still see him at Kassel.

I keep getting tips about a WAF member, also from France, who also has great items and goes to Kassel, and is involved in selling fakes as well.

Mssr. Caravano has been a fixture at the SOS for many years.

Sound advice. Cannot say for certain it is a bad cap, but it is definitely not one I would want.
