    Nickle/siver vs. Aluminum SS officers buckless

    Can someone tell me the difference between nickle/silver SS officers buckles and their aluminum counterparts. What is the difference in price between a minty SS officers nickle/silver and its aluminum counterpart. Is there really that much of a difference in scarcity of NS vs aluminum. I would think the Aluminum would be more associated with the early Waffen SS and NS with Allgemeine SS. Just needing a little background fellas as what I pulled up on search really was not helpfull......Thanks alot Jimmy

    Hello Jimmy,

    SS off. buckles by nickel are for sure scarcer then alu ones and it mainly depends on the quantity manufactured : I'm sure JP will offer more info about.

      The SS-VT (former Waffen-SS) was up and running by 1937. Latest SS buckles made of nickel silver were manufactured in 1936. This is the reason why we say nickel silver SS buckles were made for or worn by the Allgemeine SS. But if time frame for manufacture is accurate, it is another story for wear. Many nickel silver buckles were worn until the very last days of the war by all formations of the SS.

      Regarding which ones are rarer, or at least more difficult to find, it is logical to say the nickel silvers are. The increasing number of SS personnal over the years (and so their officers) is just the reason. But putting all SS officer buckles (NS or aluminum) at the same level is absolutely non sense. As Ric pointed, in each category some are much rarer than others. As an example a nickel silver marked 35/36 is very common when one unmarked or marked O&C Ges.gesch. (with capital G at Ges.) is very rare. Same does apply to the aluminum ones: marked 36/40 or 36/39 Type 2 are very common when 36/37 and 36/39 Type 1 are rare to very rare! An aluminum 36/39 Type 1 is much rarer than a nickel silver 35/36!

      But of course when money talks everything becomes rare

            In order very common to very rare:
            * 36/39 Type 2 & 36/40
            * 36/38
            * 36/37
            * 36/39 Type 1
            * 257/xx (SS buckle ONLY - NOT Police buckles - Can be said extremely rare)

              I know this is probably a dumb question, but could someone post a couple of pictures showing the difference between Type one and type 2. Thanks Jimmy

                It is not a dumb question since many collectors do not even know there is a Type 1 and a Type 2.
                I will post those photos tomorrow.

                    JP..... Were the type 1 and 2 Overhoff SS officers made throughout the period or were they confined to a certain timeframe and made only in Aluminum............thanks again for your insight. How much would a nice leather belt with alluminum keeper go for, just the belt no buckle....Thanks Jimmy

                      Both were made in 1939 and so both in aluminum. I named Type 1 the serie I believe to have been produced first and Type 2 the following serie made after during the same year.

                              Marking of Type 1. Notice it since it makes it the Type 1.
