Chad, I forgot to mention in connection with your question about my first posting on this thread. The buckle box is a gun metal grey finish as original and was probably much darker (slate grey), when first manufactured.

Again a most illuminating thread. I especially love the no. 13 as this has the colours the wrong way round (silver rune and gold box, and abviously not because of wear or polishing). I have always been wondering at why so many 'unofficial' colour combos and rune shapes should exist with the DJ buckle, even taking into account that this rune was also used by Pfadfinder groups (another Pandora's box altogether). Keep at it!!

Totally agree with your comments Karl, insofar as we are now seeing a huge number of "permutations on the theme" - great !

I have always thought that the reason why there are so many designs of the DJ, was and like the SA, commercially driven by the makers. An initially "unregulated" design and I have assumed that the various manufacturers just felt that there was a potentially huge market which could be exploited.

Again and similar to the SA's, artistic licence being demonstrated and executed in order to draw the attention of a potential customer and for a sale to be made.

To be perfectly honest, I am not even sure when the DJ buckle first made an appearance - 1931 or 1932 ??

Attached are two more DJ buckles and with a slender Sig Rune, displaying however, eccentric length arms.

The first one is quite interesting, as it would appear to be an Imperial or Weimar box, with the Sig Rune attached by soldered pins.

Just when the DJ buckle was introduced is an interesting question. In the 'Verordnunsblatt der Reichsjugendführung' summer dress regukations for the Hitler Youth are published dated August 10th, 1933. These still prescribe the SA-Koppelschloß. At the time, I only took a note for my buckle files and can't find the correponding photocopy which ended up in another folder, but I was always under the impression that these regulations covered the DJ as well. Not having the complete regulation before me, I may however be mistaken on that. From a Berg & Nolte ad dated december 1933 we know that both the HJ and DJ were official ('amtlich') by that time.

Thankyou for the most interesting "regulations" information.

I know that you have kindly supplied aspects toward this information before and also, have made reference to a pre HJ-Verordnungsblatt, although still 1933 publication, by Lebrecht/Vogler (unofficial).

Perhaps I am correct in assuming that the various 1933 publications, show what can be crudely described as the "standard" DJ-Koppelschloß.

If this assumption is correct, then perhaps all "the others" are pre 1933 ?

Catella of course shows a photograph of a HJ member wearing a full size SA-Koppelschloß (dated by the author as 1930 ?), together with extracts from a St. u L catalogue, showing a Sig Rune buckle.
