    Hopefully - The Definitive Answer

    Ok,

    Here we have the definitive answer Troops.

    German Technical - Klappe = flap, valve, hatch, damper.

    Took some finding but:

    All Extracts taken from D 656/21 Manual. Pages 75, 97, and 98





    Page 75 Exhaust System

    Second Paragraph mentions that there is a hinged Flap which is held/kept open by a bolt.

    Last Paragraph: Basically Translated says;
    The Flap is closed for underwater driving in that the bolt is removed, which hangs on a chain. Exhaust gasses force the flaps open against exterior water pressure.





    Page 97 - Preparation for For Underwater Driving

    15: Sperrbolzen der Auspuffklappen lösen - Remove Locking Bolt from the Exhaust Flaps




    Page 98 – After Underwater Driving

    7: Auspuffklappen mit den Sperrbolzen festsetzen - Secure Exhaust Flaps with Locking Bolt.




    So the Exhaust Flaps do not get secured in the closed position for submerged driving - hence no gasket or seal needed.
    They act like Flappers whilst submerged

    Hope that helps solve the mystery or any confusion - unless you know differently

          Flappers;

          These exhaust flappers prevent the natural exhaust scavenging of water back into the exhaust system using the outside water pressure to push the flapper shut on the Exhaust back pressure cycle of the engine. Start your car and at curb idle hold the tip of a rag over the end of the exhaust pipe. You will see the rag get pulled back into the pipe end quickly on each scavenging event. Thats also why the tin flaps on the top of a diesel truck stack pipes rattle at idle.
