Das Boot is good, but, I would like to see a movie about Prien or Kretchmer from a pure honest view that only focuses on the events and not the political groveling. How about a movie about Wittman- "Lion of Normandy", showing him as a warrior poet (I've read his letters to his wife) and his struggle against overwhelming odds.

where did you get these letters? (I have always suspected a remarkable love story)

      Would mine a read myself........

Gran Sasso, has anyone published a decent memoir of Barkmann's? Something that he had a hand in. I would love to read his thoughts, particularly on his post war experiences, but these memoirs tend to be more miss than hit and I'm loathe to throw my money away on books that serve to perpetuate antiquated attitudes.
        Cheers

No complete book was published, but you can find some of his battle-stories in the book of Will Fey (tolb by Barkmann to him), and in the Ardennes-issue of the After-the-battle publications.

I went to hear the German side of things and this idiot who went with me starts talking about how we saved the world from nazis and asked him how it felt to fight on the criminal side ect.. I was able to get this LT. to go get a bier so I could talk and Herr Barkmann told me of all the evil he witnessed from the "good" side. He said he was very mistreated at the end of the war by the allies. So I think that is why he may not like talking to ami's. That, and it seems whenever authors go interview German vet's (in the past) they wrote very bad things about them or cast them as robots following a madman. Noone what's to be portrayed like that. I also would like to see some movies made of these warriors, shooting down over 350 planes, knocking out a whole tank rgt, sinking over 300,000 tons, these heros did the impossible.
                    Heros? Mistreated? Poor little Nazis...

Sorry but I had to reply to this even though its ‘off topic’.

Have we not all moved on and learnt that not all Germans where Nazi’s and not to tar all peoples with the same political brush of the governing power in their country, both past and present? It seems a very ignorant and out dated attitude to me.
Talk to any Vietnam/Iraq/Afgan vet and ask him if he fully agreed and supports the politics that put him there, ask him if he fought for those politics or if he fought for his own life and his friends.
In the same way not all post WW2 vets are Republican or Democrat, (or in the Uk conservative or labour) not all Germans where Nazi’s.

Let’s not forget that in war the winners get to write the history. Atrocities where carried out on all side both during and after the fighting. Yes the Nazi regime was despicable and their ideology was far beyond any acceptance by a reasonable rational person but have we not just in resent history fought to free others from such oppressive regimes? Which must mean we understand that a countries population for the most part stand separate from a countries governing power?

                      Merry Christmas everyone.

Talk to American tank crews who were there, and they'll refer to Barkmann as a real bastard, but there will be unbridled admiration in their voices....

I'm planning another trip to Normandie for this August. This time I'd like to visit the place where Ernst Barkmann confronted the US column of Sherman tanks, later named "Barkmann's Corner".

Can anyone tell me exactly where this spot is? What highway and near what towns? Based on the information I have, it was near the towns of Le Lorey and Neufbourg, but I cannot find either one of those places on my maps.

                          I would appreciate any help.

He may have not been a party member (or maybe he was) but I bet he took this oath:
"I swear by almighty God this sacred oath:
                            I will render unconditional obedience
to the Fuehrer of the German Reich and people, Adolf Hitler,
                            Supreme Commander of the Wehrmacht,
                            and, as a brave soldier,
I will be ready at any time
to stake my life for this oath."

At least he survived to be "mistreated". My uncle was gunned down in an open field by a group of "heroes"

Its war-people die. Caught in the open - why? poor combat tactics, incompetant command or just bad luck....I am sure many died on all sides for all those reasons, whether they be 'heroes' or not.

"I, _____, do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God."

                                Sounds remarkably similar.....

We ALL took that oath, and we all had the mindset that we were doing what was right. Circumstances beyond the average grunts' control, often dictate otherwise.
