    Hello,

I plan to visit this site probably next summer if I can get across the ocean. Can someone post a picture of a Map of the area with the important areas high lighted so I can save it for next summer.

    Thanks,
    Cam

I have driven down RN172 in the past and missed Barkmann's corner as a photo opportunity.

Will do, I was intending to go here to visit Micheal Wittmanns grave. I'll get some photos of the vivistors centre to post here.

      Cheers,

      Mark

        Barkmann

Peters - Go here for a portion of his story:http://www.achtungpanzer.com/gen5.htm

Gran Sasso - Thanks for the additional information. This will really help as I make my visit there in August. Now I can try to visualize the action correctly.

It sounds like you have been very fortunate to have met Herr Barkmann. Do you know him well? I have a friend whose father goes fishing with Herr Barkmann. Unfortunately I've been told he does not care for Americans too much. However, I don't know if that is really true or not. I have a few items from him in my collection but they did not come to me directly from him.

In August I also plan to visit the site where Rommel was strafed and Villers-Bocage to see the site of Witmann's famous action. I did visit Witmann's grave in 2003, it should not be missed by any panzer collectore/historians.

I met Herr Barkmann back in the 80's in Nurnburg, and I got the feeling he didn't like the american army officer I was with. I went to hear the German side of things and this idiot who went with me starts talking about how we saved the world from nazis and asked him how it felt to fight on the criminal side ect.. I was able to get this LT. to go get a bier so I could talk and Herr Barkmann told me of all the evil he witnessed from the "good" side. He said he was very mistreated at the end of the war by the allies. So I think that is why he may not like talking to ami's. That, and it seems whenever authors go interview German vet's (in the past) they wrote very bad things about them or cast them as robots following a madman. Noone what's to be portrayed like that. I also would like to see some movies made of these warriors, shooting down over 350 planes, knocking out a whole tank rgt, sinking over 300,000 tons, these heros did the impossible.

Agree! It´s like talking to a Nam vet and bringing up that asshole Lt. Calley or whatever his name was. Not that I like commies – in fact I dislike them very much – but if you are a real soldier you don´t kill children.

I don't believe there are any "good" war movies out there from the German perspective. Stalingrad was poor and was just an attempt by the Germans to beat themselves up to show the world they are very sorry for what the world says they did. I fanyone knows of others I'd like to know. Das Boot is good, but, I would like to see a movie about Prien or Kretchmer from a pure honest view that only focuses on the events and not the political groveling. How about a movie about Wittman- "Lion of Normandy", showing him as a warrior poet (I've read his letters to his wife) and his struggle against overwhelming odds.

There is a good one from the late 50s or early 60s about Marseille.

                      -

IMO yes!!! Just to hear German soldiers speaking German... The military behaviour... The zackigkeit... The uniforms... Much better than Private Ryan and all that crap.

Cam - I'll post a scan of my map after my trip so I can mark it up for you after finding the location.

Ludwig - What is the title of the movie you are talking about and where is it available?

                        Thanks

Finally some decent perspective and insight in this thread! Thanks

I wait for the day the world dares to witness the true stories where germans are humans and not crazy screaming clumsy nazis! Hard fighting soldiers working for the loosing side! I want them to get credit for what they actually achieved in the battle field!

You inspire to make more historical travel as well!

                                Cheers,
