    Good question

With extreme difficulty mate.I read years ago that during the attempt on Hitlers life 20/07/44 one SS Sgt. excelled in his duties and was awarded the GPB there and then, whether that would have been engraved, whether Hitler awarded it personally who knows.Imagine the price on a GPB with AH 20-7 44 !!!! Patzwall cannot be the only archive, surely ?

To pick a name - even with a potential relationship to the date - and then searching the file in hopes for a mention of a honorary GPB having been awarded at a specific date is not very likely to deliver a hit. IMO research into lists of suggested awardees is the way to do it. Looks like JoeW has some experience.

Kyle, Stroop does not carry a GPB device on his listing in the Novembe 1944 SS general officers DAL. Offhand, I would say that he is out of the running as other Ehrenhalber GPB SS recipients do have the GPB device showing in their DAL listings.

As d-h-f noted above, unless you elect to do the research yourself, seeking recipients by researching chosen names can be time consuming, expensive and more often than not, extremely frustrating. I speak from experience.

Patzwall is not the only archive. As I explained above, he is not an archive. He took the time and effort to find the archival listings of the A.H. GPBs in the archives in Germany and transcribed them to his book in more organized manner than what is found in the archives. I chose the same course and spent my funds to secure the microfilm containing these same records.

Speculating on an owner and trying to link him to the badge is a waste of time IMO.

          Hello again,

Let me ask everyone this, were "blanks" of these badges ever found postwar where an engraving could have been added?

In theory, even if I never find the owner (which is fine with me) if the badge itself is authentic, the engraving should be as well, correct?

Are there any known examples in which the original NSDAP recipient number was filled in and the badge was re-engraved to become something more desirable?

Well it is obvious to me that a 30mm AH badge would fetch more than an unknown numbered 30mm GPB. But I am not aware of any example of this. Are you satisfied that the reverse is original and un-messed with? Have you checked the level of the reverse with a hard straight edge to see if there seems to be any missing metal? Does the finish of the gilt appear consistent with the front? There are some scratches on the reverse.

Yes, original blanks have been observed. There are numbered GPBs with "greek" numerals, which are suspected to have been engraved outside of the standard process.

Your theory does not hold, but I think between the lines you are suggesting the possibility of the date having been added later. If this was the case, I am wondering why a non documented date would have been used. Maybe lack of source material ? Even anniversary dates of important NSDAP events/milestones would have made more sense.

There was a recent thread on WAF discussing another honorary GPB, which had some sort of rework done to the reverse, which left traces of an earlier date. A couple re-numbered GPBs do exist.

okay, now some people are doubting the piece I originally posted.

Does anyone know of a textbook military style honor badge for sale?

Here is another piece I found online, but it is the smaller version.

that example to me is very odd as I can see former numbers underneath the A.H. dated engraving.

Does the Patzwall reference list any 1944 or 1945 recipients of the honor badge or does it abruptly end after the January 1943 badges were given?

Here is another one. Also overpriced, so it's been sitting for a while.

I prefer the numbered examples that can be attributed.

If you're lucky. Otherwise it's just a numbered badge, often to a nobody. Sometimes to a somebody.
