Please post a picture as is, before you do anything...frankly, I don't like the sound of your friend's suggestions, and there's most likely a much better way of repairing it...

      Cheers,

      Arran.

Was the medal originally stitched into place, or attached to a metal hook on the bar? Either way, I think it would be better to re-attach it with a couple of loops of thread around the loop...

          Cheers,

          Arran.

Look up under the ribbon and see if there is a hole or hook in the backplate. Then it should be an easy task to get a ring, short wire or even paperclip through it. I can't see how glue could possibly help.

              Check this out.

I would suggest merely slipping the medal back into its place under the ribbon folds, mounting it in a frame and being done with it.

The medals I reattached (see the link) are done in this fashion. But if you are the sort who likes to handle his medals from time to time, I think a loop or two of thread will secure it. Get a seamstress to do a good job, if you are not handy with needle and thread.

But no glue!!!!! Whatever you do should be reversible, I would say.

by the looks of it it was sewn to the cloth under the ribbon,
so the construction looks like this
Felt on the very back, Metal bar, (guessing cotton) to give it the puffy look, piece of cloth that the medals were sewn on to, then the ribbon for the medal then the medal

what about soldering a paperclip to the frame?

                    Fyi

Kai Winkler has for sale on his site the same bar set-up, but with a 25 year Polizei service cross for $345.

If you solder a paper clip to yours, it will be worth considerably less.

Ralph is correct on this Never do a repair that can not be reversed at a later date.
