    Hi,

    héhé, it seemed that USB microscopes are rising amongst militaria messageboards and collectors.
    We got similar question about the hallmark on the french 1939 Croix de Guerre.

    Many collectors are already using iPad or laptops during militaria conventions to check their datas when they want to check an item before bying it.

    The price of an USB microscope is usually around 25 euros.
    You can use it with your iPad/laptop for any sale...
    It is better to look "strange" in conventions than to be fooled by a fake item...

      Great point. Use the technology we have to our advantage. Question... hows about a small but bright pocket flashlight and a jewelers loop? Would the person behind the table whose wares you are examining take offence?
      Would that setup provide enough detail to catch the fakes?

        A loupe is the least expensive and in many way the best tool available, at a show.

        All you really need is a 7x magnifcation.

        The use of both hands, with no distractive eye bothers while examining an item cannot be overstated.

        These can be purchased for less than $5.

          Went to a military show a while ago. DJ badge took my fancy, asked dealer if it was ok for me to look at. Took my Loupe out and as soon as he saw that, he told me it was a fake. It reinforced that fact. The power of the loupe.
          So what did this Pillar of Military Collecting do, he put it straight back on the table for sale.

              Future Hopes

              Wouldn't it be nice if, some time in the future, sites would post microscopic images of their badges/pins for sale in addition to the standard front/back images currently used? That would be a much more safe environment for buyers to shop in.

                Don't worry, I think it's only a question of years before it will be a standard way of working IMO.
