Attn: Jo Rivett- SS zivilabzeichen pin

    Jo,

Not sure what you were trying to do with that SS stickpin thread with your thread showing 2 fake cast SS civil stickpins but you neglected to show microscopic examples of originals and stated that both raised and impressed Hoffs were period done and never showed an original.
Now you need to get it together and post real data.

Moderator can you remove this post. Only a few weeks ago a thread was posted about this sort of abusive, personal, aggressive rubbish posted on here.

Now we have this post, which quite frankly is not wanted or needed.

If you do have a problem with a member, keep it to a PM and don't subject the rest of us to your rant. This is a forum to discuss Third Reich, not a medium to rant and rave and attack other valuable members

Maybe he should have read the rules first:-

I had to remove a lot of insults and unnecessary personal attacks in the first post. Why I can understand the request, I do not understand the way it was presented.

          Keep it civil ...

I got sick of all this rubbish and bought myself a microscope. I have 5 SS-Zivilabzeichens made by Hoffstätter. The went all under my new toy and Jo has right: under a microscope the originals look completely different then the cast fakes.

On my first attempt pictures you can see the sharp edges and clear lines of pressed digits and letters. Note that these pictures are not very sharp and pretty dark, I use a standard microscope instead o the more advanced example of Jo.

Now I'm gonna borrow a raised Hoffstätter that I'm aware of and shall see how that one looks under magnification.

The only question I have is a simple one. If for example you are at a show and one of these pieces presents itself for purchase what are you to do. Is this evidence of fakery only gathered with a microscope and how would that work in a show/ table scenario? Are the ones being used for this the kind I remember from school or can they fit in a jacket pocket? Thanks for the time. Robert

I think it is time to pack it in if you need a microscope to collect this stuff
I for one will not be buying one

Well Mametz, if I can`t read maker marks and this does it for me then thats fine. Each to his own i suppose

So what is so outrageous with the use of a microscope? I has been used to identify fakes in other venues, like paintings. The consequence of not using "new" technologies is to let the fakes be originals? I don't think so! Furthermore, there is no need to buy a microscope as long as the results are published by the ones using it.
That one has to be on top of things in every hobby where money is involved is no secret either.
The possible belitteling of new approach avenues has so far only served the fakers. Of course, the microscope is only one aspect. SEM and FTIR are also valid tools.

I think -if we like it or not- there will come a time that simply post a clear front and reverse picture on a forum will no longer be enough to determinate if a badge is good or wrong. Especially the simply made awards will be faked into such a perfection that it will be no longer enough to use a common magnifier to see the bad from the good. I think about the Eichenlaub of the Ritterkreuz for example.

I spended a lot of money on my SS-Zivil abzeichens and FM membership pins. And I was shocked when I heard of the perfect casted fakes. The microscope costed me a couple 100 euro's but now I feel much more comfortable. Every new enamel I will buy in the future goes under the microscope for a quick check.

I'm aso planned to buy a macro lens for my reflex camera in the future. Fakes can become better and better but they still will reveal there faults when you enlarge them dramatically. And it also will take some time to learn the features from originals under high magnification.

                              Regards, Wim
