Well said, Richard. Each of us is merely the latest caretaker of the artifacts that make up the collections we hold, and it makes sense to me to want to make sure that the pieces that I have cherished for so long are moved forward into the hands of newer collectors who will maintain and respect them the way I did in my time. And given the uncertainty of how the disposition of such collections will be managed by those whose responsibility it will be to either give the pieces to museums or sell them off, it seems to make good sense for a conscientious collector to do that hard work himself, while he can make sure it's properly handled.

Of course, the worst possible outcome would be for a surviving family member or loved one -- someone who had had no respect for our collections during our lives and who had no knowledge of the values these things hold, or how best to treat them -- winding up disposing of our collections by either giving them away to other relatives with no interest in the hobby or by throwing them into the trash in order to get out from under the responsibility of dealing with 'all this Nazi garbage...'

Though I had not been in touch with John Pepera personally for the last few months of his life, I had heard from others that his health was failing for some time prior to his death. If he was aware that this was the way it would be going for him, in the short run (we all know that it's our lot in the long run), then perhaps he took advantage of the time left to him to make sure that his beloved collections would be cared for after his death the way they were during his lifetime.

This is a subject that none of us wants to think about in terms of future living without our prized collections surrounding us. We have worked so hard to amass these pieces of historic life that we don't choose to part with them, ever... Yet we know we must. I think it would be worse to finally achieve that dream that many of us have, namely to die in our sleep, at peace with all in the world, while we have held onto our collections right up to the end. While this removes the 'burden' of disposing of our trophies ourselves, against our will, it also virtually assures that our relics will never be dealt with in the same caring fashion with which we held them for our lifetimes.

    Just some thoughts on eventualities...!

I treasure the artifacts I have, and at the urging (nagging) from the wife I have catalogued nearly all the items I have acquired.

I also have an agreement with a close friend and collector that if I pop off this earth before him then he will take care of my collection (disposing off), and I will do the same if he pops off before me.

Br.James, you are making big assumptions about John P. that he took time in his last months or last few years to catalog / price his collection, or figure out who wanted what; I knew him personally since 1969 or so, with many visits to his house, & believe me, he had this situation covered many years ago, items tagged, priced, listed etc., & all he had to do was undertake some updating of pricing. John was on the case as the saying goes.

          Hi Silesien,

Thanks for your personal reflection on our dear friend and colleague! Please let me clarify that I did not mean to infer that John spent his time during the last months/years of his life cataloging his vast holdings -- though I never met him personally, I cannot imagine anyone with a significant number of collections such as John owned as trying to find the time to catalog every piece. I have been collecting for over 50 years, and about 30 years ago I decided to begin cataloging my collections, so I personally know how difficult and time-consuming that endeavor can be! (And in truth, I began this process, not from a sense of the finiteness of life but because I found that I could no longer remember whether I owned a particular piece or I didn't! Believe me, it only takes a couple of occasions when you spend your hard-earned money to secure a particular artifact, only to find that you had already purchased another example of that item years earlier! That is as good an instigator for beginning to catalog your collections as I have ever heard!)

Does anyone know what will happen to John's firearms? I am a collector of antique, WWII and modern firearms and he had a few I am interested in acquiring. Will these be staying the in the US and sold domestically?

            Thanks.

Think on this as well. Any item no matter what provenance is disposed of without its provenance will undoubtedly be viewed as improper or worse fake by neophytes who haven't done the proper research. Forums often become the stalking grounds for .

                Hi,

I've read a few times about mr Pepera's amazing GPB collection. Sadly i've never been in contact with him, but im starting to get really inquisitive to see pictures of that collection (150 gb's?). Were there ever posted pictures of this collection? i tried to look up his older posts but either missed the post(s) or they were not posted here on WAF but elsewhere. Since some people made references to this i wonder if any pictures are available to see?

                best regards,
                Gaston

Many thanks for posting this picture. This is very impressive and shows the dedication in collecting that mr Pepera must have had.

                          best regards,

Or could it actually bring down the price on GPBs with so many in one auction?

John also had many attributed badges to high ranking officials like Adolf Wagner for example. He also had many of the AH version of the badge as well.

Should be interesting to see how it all turns out!
