    John Pepera Collection?

Has anyone heard anything about the selling/auctioning of our dear colleague John Pepera's vast holdings?

According to Jason Burmeister, the catalogs are finished and at the printers currently and you will see the material in a May auction for Hermann Historica

Many thanks, my friends! While I corresponded with John for many years, I never personally met nor had the opportunity to purchase anything from him -- though I know he was a regular at the MAX and the SOS as a dealer. I would enjoy having something from his vast collections to remember him by. If John liked an artifact, he would usually wind up adding it to his collections, and that means that he had a special relationship with each artifact he owned.

I think there will be a lot of interested parties and I will be watching as well, being a dedicated catalog comprised of his 50 year collection it will be a great opportunity to grab some very nice and very rare items. Guy was very picky and held a lot of solid material and premium pieces.

Specifically the next auction will be from 5 - 16 May. I've never had the chance to see John's collection as a whole lot, except for his GPB and Honour ring collection. Very sad that this is going to be the way to actually see his stuff.

              Hi Mil,

Just curious... But did you ever have the opportunity to meet him in person?

              Best,
              Rob

I think we will see most of the collection, however a few pieces I heard have 'leaked' out before the HH sale !

Nothing leaked out, John had allocated items to be set aside for specific persons in a couple cases. These were his wishes as a collector.

And that was his right to do so of course. I'm just saying that its not the entire collection. Will be fun to see the mans lifetime work, there are various bits I know he had that interest me. Good for the family using an auction, probably the best way to get maximum yield.

John had a wonderful collecting sense. I hope his family receives the rewards of a lifetime spent collecting among the best of things this hobby offered.

I know of 3 GPBs that were set aside and they now have completed the missing pieces to an impressive BO grouping.

On a side note, I'm lucky to have acquired more than a few items from John over the years and they still reside in my collection.

I understand and just sought to clarify, John was very specific and an intelligent guy who kept meticulous records and apparently instructions. Given all the horror stories over the years about these types of situations it is nice to see this was handled appropriately and diligently. I think you shall see most everything and Erich has noted one exception where John saw to it that several badges were mated with a grouping that was known, and that is just John. Looking forward to seeing the catalog and the collection is extensive.

Unfortunately it is threads such as this that make me wonder if burdening my family with the dispostion of my collection after my demise, no matter how good my records are, is really worth my enjoyment of the items while I am alive. Of late, even though I still enjoy the study of the history, I have found my interest in acquiring items becoming a weaker urge than divestiture.

I don't want my survivors to have to go through all I have amassed and try to make heads or tails of it. Another fear I have is of the large numbers of small items I have, no matter how well catalogued, much could wind up disappearing without my family members ever noticing. I think a downsizing to a more managable number of items may be necessary.
