    Cast iron ah plaque

    Good or bad please?

    Got casting pits or (artificial?) corrosion pits overall and no markings whatever that i can see least of all sculptor wolff's name. Front painted black (period?) and reverse left as is.

    Has a heavy 'staple'-shaped hook that looks cast-in or soldered on too much rust to tell.

    But at least the 'scooped-out' reverse is something i cant find elsewhere. Has it got a chance?

      These are clean casts in general. It has the proper mount but they are reproduced. It was either corroded and repainted or is a reproduction. Rust to rear appears to be red rust, so maybe artificial aging applied. I would walk away from that one and do not think its right.

        Hello:

        I have one that is identical on the front- however, there are some clear markings on the reverse side. "ges. gesch" (all lower case) appears to the left of the neck, above the text block. Lower left corner of the text block has a capital "C." and the lower right has a capital "L.H.". Also, the hanging device on mine is a piece of rounded steel stock (small diameter) that is bridging the two vertical sprue posts, that have been drilled to accommodate the hanger.

          I will also mention that the entire text paragraph is visible on the reverse side (flopped, of course).

                    I think it appears red b/c I use using a desk light at night. see the new pix.....

                      The comparison piece posted by Waffe is what this should look like. Their not rare so probably best to wait for one that is without question.

                          There are a couple different base metals for these. But the cast should be better and their definitely knocked off. Take them as they come but inexpensive enough that you can be picky

                            i dont know mate, surely its A LOT of time and effort to make a fake in cast iron? If it had been an aluminium or a tin sheet one i might be a bit more wary.

                            If anything, i would say that the black over-painting is a more recent job. i have a cast iron DAF plaque and in comparison the lettering is pretty crisp and readable. It looks to me like yours has sat for a long time corroding in a damp environment to cause that level of pitting and the lettering to crumble apart, then someone attempted to clean it up, probably painted over it with a traditional product like black leading. The surface pitting is UNDER the paint..

                              thanks - that thought had occurred to me as well, tho in some 3rd or 4th world countries they can do knockoffs pretty cheap I hear.... still and all the details of this thing aren't to bad are they.
