Considering purchasing Gold Party Badge #8653. Does anyone know who the original recipient is?

Very nice piece with low number and replaced pin. The original pin plate was very carefully removed in order to preserve the gilt finish. Wish I could help you with the name of the original holder.

Perhaps I missed a note somewhere, but how did we get to knowing that this badge may have "come out of France," as Andreas stated, or that it is somehow associated with the region of Elsass, as Loggie mentioned?

I will vouch for and even did start a thread in the Association area that this dealer is excellent and well worth watching and dealing with if you get an opportunity.

Your question -- "Isn't it called Alsace?" -- caught my eye and, as I didn't have a handle on the etymology of the word, I went to Wikipedia and found this:
"Alsace (French: Alsace [alzas]; Alsatian: Elsàss [ˈɛlsɑs]; German: Elsass, pre-1996: Elsaß, IPA: [ˈɛlzas]; Latin: Alsatia)...The name "Alsace" can be traced back to the Old High German Ali-saz or Elisaz, meaning "foreign domain". An alternative explanation derives it from a Germanic Ell-sass, meaning "seated on the Ill", a river in Alsace. The region was historically part of the Holy Roman Empire. It was gradually annexed by France in the 17th century under kings Louis XIII and Louis XIV and made one of the provinces of France. Alsace is frequently mentioned in conjunction with Lorraine, because German possession of parts of these two régions (as the imperial province Alsace-Lorraine, 1871–1918) was contested in the 19th and 20th centuries, during which Alsace changed hands four times between France and Germany in 75 years." So, yes, apparently the English usage is "Alsace," as is the French, though Loggie chose to use the form that the Germans used while in control of that region, "Elsass." Ain't language wonderful?!

My Grandmother was from Alsace and she was German.

I have cousins that live in a village near his. I will be paying him a visit in May after my return. The area is beautiful and much different than the rest of France. You can always tell an Elsasser by their name. First name is French and the last name is German.
