    SA Treffen Badge

    Erich,

The pin is a safety pin type and the holding plate has a raised line to accomodate it. Also, one eagle wing is smaller than the other and slightly lower. I never noticed that before!

Is there a safety pin instead of the regular pin on the reverse? Is one wing of the eagle smaller and lower than the other? On the hollow examples I've seen, it's a very distinctive malformation, but I can't tell for sure if yours is like that.

Never seen 1st type with a safety pin like Stan's badge. Guys is it Ok for 1st type?

        Erich,

Herewith my 1st type round badge. It is made of steel. Recipients scratched details "Ilse Tess-Burgh. Hamburg. St. Georgstr. 16 III".

I think it's a beauty. You may disagree!

I agree that your badge certainly looks old and very different from most so dare I say...convincing but as to your broad-sweeping statement above....says who?

          Terry,

that statement was made by Erich in post #12.

My badge incidentally is hollow with the front and back soldered together.

            Terry,
Were you referring to the fact that most of the deformed round type badges are reproductions? If so, I don't know anyone who has collected early political badges over the last 30-40 years who think these are original. When they first began hitting the dealer's tables at shows, I believe it was in the 1980s, they were suspect because there were so many, the quality was lacking, and some were obviously artificially aged. Mickey Huffman, in his book, pictures one as a representation of a common fake, and notes that they're on dealers' tables all over and retail for about $50.00 to $65.00. Compare the execution of these flattish hollow examples in question with earlier and later tinnies, and you can see that there's something wrong. I've never heard any knowledgable collector say that this pattern is good.
I've got one of these round types that I picked up perhaps 10 years ago as a curiousity. If you have any information that would indicate these are actually originals, I'd love to hear it!

              Erich,

I too have collected for over 40 years but have never really given the 1st. pattern much thought as I was happy to possess a very nice 2nd pattern which I bought in 1967 for £1.00!

I purchased my 1st. pattern around a year ago and love it to bits! Maybe I've bought a repro but I very much doubt it. I for one are certainly not convinced that these so-called 1st. pattern badges are all fakes, though from what you said earlier, many probably are.

That looks like a good 2nd type stamped Braunschweig badge--it's certainly held up well considering its being buried for 50+ years!
