    Hi Mil,

I'll have to dig that badge out and check the reverse to be sure; I'll let you know what I find.

Also of interest in the photo in note #11 is the rare Frontbann Badge being worn by Berlin SA-Gruppenführer Karl Ernst -- who was one of the murder victims during "the Night of Long Knives."

    Cheers,

    Br. James

      Hi again, Mil,

Well, I found the badge and checked for a "Q" on the reverse of the swastika, but I find nothing there at all, except for the pin mounting, of course. Does this indicate that the badge is a fake...?

        Hello James,

Not sure how yours looks like, but here's mine, freshly photographed:

          Hi James,

You've rekindled my interest on the Frontbann badge.
I did a search and the war-relics forum has a pretty good discussion on it.

Interesting view of variations. Do you have any forensic details of the variations. I have a Deschler version/no 9, but the reverse of the swaz immediately above the maker mark is marked with a double O as you can see in this photo. Actually, there is a small o within the O. Weight of the badge is 9.5 grams. Any other weights recorded ? I note in the images above a difference in color between the no 9 Deschler and the 9 Deschler. My no 9 is identical in color to the Deschler 9 variation above even down to the evidence of vertigris.

My example has a plain swastika on the reverse...no 0 or o or anything else on the swas itself. I also notice that the "ch" in "Munchen" is stamped much lighter than the rest of that word...I don't know what that means, other than perhaps the die was degrading at the time of this strike?

From all of these differences noted to exist in this one badge design, it seems clear than there were a number of strikings of this piece over time, and that three or more different dies were made and used during these strikings.

Very interesting! Sometimes I really wish I had taken the time and had the interest and the funds to learn about the use of photography when I was much younger; it certainly would have assisted this discussion from my end!

                Hello James,

Photography isn't that difficult. It all requires some patience. Good equipment and software skills will help an extra mile but that can be learnt / self-taught.

Br James, the image of mine was recoded in my IPhone using a magnifying glass. I had a shadow problem, but hi-tech photo equipment isn't necessary.
