    Horst Wessel record mystery?

    Hi guys,

Wasn't sure exactly where to put this but this is a 78 rpm gramophone record of the Horst Wessel Song sung by the SA/SS choir so I think it fits in the political category.

It's a rare copy of the Horst Wessel Lied published on an Electrola 78 rpm record in 1933 to commemorate Hitlers rise to power. It is sung by the SA and SS choir, and is conducted by Alfred Engel. If there is any other information about it I would love to hear it from more knowledgeable forum members !

However, what interests me here is the record sleeve. Although the record is an Electrola brand, it is a Columbia sleeve, and although Electrola was owned by Columbia I find it unlikely that this was the original sleeve, however the sleeve is possible commemorating the 1940 olympics, which I find very interesting considering the record it holds!

    Pictures:

Does anyone know anything about the location on the sleeve or Columbia and the 1940 olympics? Or anything else about the record itself? It's all a bit of an ironic mystery to me...

    Thanks in advance

P.S. - you can take a listen to the record itself here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YEvK...ctr=1396781397

Try to avoid involving yourself in the comment section - some very unsavory debates occur down there...

For some reason your posting has been blocked: "The following content has been identified by the YouTube community as being potentially offensive or graphic. Viewer discretion is advised."

Why would this not just be a simple case of record in wrong sleeve?

The whole viewer discretion thing happens to all Nazi related videos on YouTube in an effort to minimise those who might be offended by that kind of stuff.

I do think that it may very well be a record in the wrong sleeve but I thought it was rather ironic to see the anthem of the Nazi party in a sleeve seemingly advertising the 1940 olympics (at least that's what I understand of it) and was just wondering what anyone else thought, and also if anybody knows anything about the record, even maybe something about Alfred Engel - the conductor - on whom very little information I have been able to find.

There was no 1940 Olympics due to the war starting in 1939.

These records were on general sale in the 30/40s, they were used at functions that had no live band to play the NSDAP anthem.

What is interesting is the 1940 sleeve made ready for the 1940 Olympics that didn't happen, never seen one of those before, but highly likely put together after the war somehow, I like the record itself, best Sean

I also collect 78's and very often the record sleeves don't match the actual record they contain. The advertising sleeves were made to protect the relatively fragile surface of the record and to keep the dust out of the groove, so it didn't matter what sleeve was used with what record. In addition, the sleeves were often discarded because the records would be put into albums.
That said, very nice record and unusual sleeve.

Yes it is a nice record, it's one of the rarer ones I own! I wonder, can anyone read the name on the label? I have a bit trouble with European running writing.
