Nuremberg Desk Eagles

Hi all,
Here are two different desk eagles, one with marble base and one without.
Opinions on them will be greatly appreciated, the one with the RZM mark has the marble base and the other has no apparent markings.

Hello cevensky,
In my opinion, neither of these Nuremberg eagles are original to the period.
The Non-RZM marked eagle has very weak details and the base casting is incorrect underneath for attachment. The RZM M3/90 eagle almost looks like a sand-casting of an original- again poor details and incorrect base mounting method. Have a look at some past threads showing original examples and the differences between these and the originals will be obvious.

Neither one of these eagles are original imho they are poor quality repros.

Please see this photo & note the differences in the RZM 3/90 marking and base construction & quality of casting. The original M3/90 eagles are never of great quality to start with which is why some people have trouble accepting them as original but the one you show is shocking in detail and is certainly a poor quality modern cast of this one,

Here are some photos of the bases and the base construction methods.
Note the second photo shows a couple of original Nuremberg eagle bases complete with their characteristic 'guide-pins' that fit into the marble bases to prevent the eagles from rotating. So far no reproduction eagles have been found with this feature.

Mil is completely right - the detail on the eagle is seriously lacking. Original pieces are exquisite in detail and workmanship.

There are two main variations of Nuremberg Eagles, I call them Type A and Type B. The one on the right is Type A with a slightly flattened chest and with higher relief in details. The one on the left as Type B has a puffier chest and some exhibit feathers on the reverse, while others have a smooth back on the reverse. For all types, they can be unmarked, or marked. Markings do sometimes show the RZM code (with a M3 suffix), or a maker mark (usually HB) or both RZM and a maker marking. They are usually made of hollow aluminum and affixed using two screws from the base. The colour of the base are usually cream coloured marble or dark grained granite or other similar rock and with a felt backing. In some instances, the original manufacturers sticker will still be present.

Nice description of the two eagle types 'A' & 'B' but I have to disagree with you on one point -

They are usually made of hollow aluminum

I have never seen one made of aluminium, they always seem to be made of a zink casting that has been silver plated,
