If this is not an original piece then it does seem odd that fakers would copy exactly all the other details , but cock it up with a different style of swastika.
    But comments, please.

      Mike,

Except when you take into account what happens to the swastika when you recast one of these and that's where you see this type of thing done in many cases.

I cant be 100% off you photos but the silver looks different than what I am accustomed to in color and maybe even application, the swastika appears to have been applied after the finish maybe?.

      Best,

      Kris

        Mike,

The overall details are there, but somehow I have a problem believing it. As Kris says, the finish is somehow unusual, and to me seems very new. I am most perplexed by why a mobile swastika has been used instead. Did the maker perhaps manufacture this for a new style of desk pieces? Or perhaps the faker thought he had made a mistake and reverse it by attempting to insert a mobile swastika instead? To me, it will not be a textbook piece but still very nice to have in ones collection.

"What I'm surprised is that the maker HB (H.H. van Beusekom) or M3/28 usually marks its pieces as HB on its own and I've never seen such a desk eagle being so superfluously marked. The quality of sanded surfaces also look raw and I would expect a more refined / polished surface or it would never have made the RZM standards. If it was a non-RZM item, there might not have any proper quality control and perhaps acceptable as a private purchase, but not an RZM piece like this. The details of the talons look poor. Sure this rings some bells? Just my thoughts -MIL"
            Hi Mil,

I agree that HB (H.H van Beusekom –Gladbeck) often marked its pieces with a solitary stylized raised ‘HB’ symbol but I have also seen a number of ‘HB’ pieces also marked with the ‘HB’ next to an additional raised RZM M3/28. I also have seen examples marked with only RZM M3/28 – and some HB eagles not marked at all, or almost as annoying, marked under the base meaning they have to be taken off the marble plinths to see the marking- the smaller version of the 'HB' NSRL eagle for example.

I have no issues with the HB desk eagle you show at the start of this thread which is marked the same as the Peter Manzie’s and the late John Pepera’s excellent examples. I believe that your piece has lost all of its bronze or silvered finish, although the bronzed versions seemed to usually be mounted on big square metal bases, or maybe yours was never plated at all. Maybe it was sanded down at some point to show the temporary bright zink finish before it inevitably tarnished and this is why it looks ‘raw and unfinished’. Either way I am convinced that the eagle you show is a 100% original example.

I have also seen a heavy unmarked silver plated bronze version of this eagle that I believe is a period ‘high-end’ version and it is possible that Wessels bird could be one of these with a replacement or re-attached swastika- or a just a copy of one of these birds as the details do looks a bit soft. Unfortunately, the photos of this eagle are poor and no where near good enough to tell one way or the other.

I show an example of another of these left-facing ‘HB’ desk eagles marked the same as yours Peter’s & Johns as well as a recent find, an earlier ‘Feather-Back’ HB Nuremberg eagle marked with both the ‘HB’ logo & RZM 3/28 on the rear of the swastika.

            Best Regards,
            Michael

Another example of the classic 'HB' left-facing desk eagle with a 'bronzed' finish.

The details seem to be less crisp but it could be down to the photographs.

I agree -- a very nice piece, though it's seen a few light scrapes around the edges over the last 75+ years! Interesting that the base seems to be one of those scraped areas...??

                          Cheers,
