To answer Napalm's question, the men in the front of the group (including Grimminger) are City Councillors of Munich. The chain is their badge of office. That's Emil Maurice left of Grimminger; I can't make out the others in this photo.

Interesting image. First time I've seen the Ratsherrn involved in the marches other than as individual participants. This probably only took place when the men were forming up. I've never seen one of the Councillors wearing his chain while actually marching...

Heres a picture and article reflecting steins in use at the Burgerbraukeller.

As well I know! I have seen too many of these fine steins being used by Germans to "Highlight" one of their political discussions! That must be why they always have representatives of the Deutsches Rote Kreuz on hand to bandage the heads or cart them away!!!

I'll shoot some pictures of my stein tonight to demonstrate what I'm talking about. (at work right now).

As promised! I'm not a "political" guy, but I knew the history behind it as soon as I saw it. It's construction is also something different as the pictures will show. No doubt one of those GI's pictured brought it back after the war.

Heavy as hell and I would not want to be on the receiving end of this one!

Also not a Stein Guy, but I drank nightly from it while on vacation in Colorado

Thanks for the pics Kondor. My stein has a normal flat bottom and is not shaped like yours although it does have the same maker mark though.

These are pretty cool. Based on the postwar pics of troops enjoying a beer from these mugs, it appears these were used up to the end of the war. I know it was used in various capacities by the US troops and then the Germans until it was torn down in 1979. Of interest is that it was also the scene of an assasination attempt on Hitler during his Nov. 8, 1939 Putsch celebration speech. Fortunately for him, he finished his speech early before the time bomb went off but it caused extensive damage as seen in the below photo.

Right you are, Richard. I believe there is a Marriott Hotel now standing on the site where the Bürgerbräukeller once stood.

My Burgerbrau stein is marked the same as "der-hase-fee",s stein- the 1/2 liter mark on the outside lip, same maker mark on bottom of the base and the same design on the lid & a full 1/2 liter.

Sorry for the confusion and mine is marked the same as both of yours.

I have 3 of them. One is marked .4L with the recessed bottom. The other two are half liter with different markings. All are made by the same maker.

The recessed bottom is in the middle. Perhaps they gave the short size to the godless commies who stopped by.
