It's pretty hard to tell--this could be pre III. Reich, III. Reich, or postwar, but I'd say it's not an issue or official drum, but rather a model that could be purchased by anyone from a music store. The rims are correctly mounted but incorrectly painted for HJ, but every company, town, bowling club, shooting club, cigar smoking club, plumbers' union, etc. etc. etc. had a band and used whatever drums that were donated or purchased. Also, most family and youth magazines have advertisements for instrument sellers and picture snare drums, along with accordians, harmonicas, and bugles as popular instruments to buy. The rims were likely incorrectly repainted, probably long ago.
The problem with musical instruments is that they really have not changed over the last 100+ years. We know what the regulations are for issue items, but the civilian stuff could date from 1900 or 1955, and they'd be exactly the same.

As this is a more recent than any other drum post, I figured I'd put it here. I didn't believe metal snares were used then either, but here's a few pics I found on the forum showing what I make out to be metal snares.

Either way still fun to research and PLAY!

Thanks for posting the links! The gut snares came with a sort of inverted 'rake' that spreads out the gut strands, so I still can't see that these photos show gut or spring snares. But the one on #268 appears to be a non military drum with plated and unpainted rims.
