I am surprised at the relatively few comments on the ribbon bar, which to me is the elephant in the room. While I can not speak to the insignia or the uniform itself, the ribbon bar itself does not make ANY sense and IMO is a reproduction/put together item. With all respect to Bob and his immense knowledge on TR collectibles the combination of ribbons on this bar is impossible, IMO.

True there were individuals who had very large ribbon bars and chose to wear them in 2 rows. We have contemporary pictures to prove this, but there are just so many things wrong with this bar there is no way to justify the awards on it.

        Just a few things:

        1) As mentioned by Jeff in a previous post, his Bvn Military Merit Cross with Swords, pictured in the 1930s portrait is not included on this double rowed ribbon bar - why would he drop wearing this award? Bavarians were very proud of their service in WWI.

        2) NSDAP awards in incorrect order. 15 year (Blue) should be first followed by 10 year (Brown)

        3) An Army/Navy 4 year long service award makes absolutely no sense. Did he serve in the Armed forces in WWII?

        4) The ribbon bar has BOTH the Order of Military Merit for Combatants (Spain - red/white/red ribbon) AND the Order of Military Merit for Non Combatants (Spain - white/red/white) Makes no sense. He has more Spanish awards than members who served in the Legion Condor.....

        5) Romanian Awards on the top row last 2: Medal for Steadfast and Loyalty and one more, on the 2nd row: Faithful Service Medal, Romanian Order of the Crown Knights Class, Crusade Against Communism and what might be the Cross of Danube (hard to tell with picture) Again he has more Romanian awards than a soldier fighting with the Romanian's or a diplomat...(so what could be a possible 6 Romanian awards)

        6) 4th award on top row appears to be Silesian Medal 2nd Class

And I have not even started to discuss 3 of the other ribbons on the top row which appear to be a mix of Imperial & foreign or the fact he has a DAK medal, Russian Front, Czech Occ and Aust Annex ribbon.

To solve that miracle - maybe someone here has contact to Mr. Michael D. Miller who wrote the book "The Regional Leaders of the Nazi Party and their Deputies, 1925-1945". The second volume, which will be released in September this year, should contain the Sprenger chapter and will most probably show which awards were given to him. Maybe Mr. Miller could help us with our problem prior to the release of his second volume.
          Best, Thomas

I have that book, but the person in question does not have the rank of a "Gauleiter". It looks like he is a "Hauptbereichsleiter" or "Hauptdienstleiter"

You're completely right! The ribbon bar is complete nonsense..........

PS: Do you know of any Ribbon Bars of Gauleiters that still exist?

The second volume of the Gauleiter book is not out yet. After a few years delay as far as I know it will finally be reased in September this year. But I hope someone stays in contact to the author Miller and may ask him.

This thread is another sad reminder of buy the item not the story. "Exceptional provenance" we heard.

To me word of mouth or sold by someone from the family isn't quite cutting it anymore as solid provenance. Look at all the crap sold by Grimminger and Anny Winter with their letters of attestation as provenance. Had it meant a couple thousand more Deutsche Marks, I'm sure Anny would have provided a letter stating she pulled the object out of Adolf's underwear drawer.

What is quite a wake up call is what has been in old collections, thought to have been rare items and which now are falling apart under closer examination. This tunic went from a rare, named Gauleiter tunic, to a rare, unnamed white summer Gauleiter tunic, to a put together frankentunic with a bad ribbon bar and questionably applied insignia. Though some of the insignia may be quite rare (I'd love to have Jeff Clark weigh in on the collar tabs), it no longer is the sum of all its parts.

I am sure there are attributed medal bars and ribbon bars to Gauleiters and other high ranking political figures of the TR era.

Attached is the medal bar attributed to Wilhelm Friedrich Loeper of Gau Magdeburg-Anhalt. (this piece was shown in another thread of the WAF). The bar matches period portraits of Loeper when wearing a medal bar.

I did a quick Google search on Gauleiter portraits. Most of the images showed men who had a single row of ribbons with about 5-6 award, mostly from their WWI service. Those that had WWII ribbons typically had NSDAP awards, Faithful Service Crosses and Olympic decorations.

                                Thanks for the pic Gary!

Maybe someone has an unknown imperial ribbon bar in his collection and doesn't know the real owner
