The Austrian Marian Cross was an award founded on March 26, 1871 by the Hoch- und Deutschmeister of the Teutonic Order.
The Order had its origins in the time of the Crusades during the siege of Acre in 1190 with the establishment of a hospital for German soldiers.
The Marin Cross had largely disappeared when it was revivified in 1871 under Imperial patronage with first Archduke Wilhelm and then Archduke Eugen as Hoch- und Deutschmeister (High Grand Master) as a prestigious award to encourage and support charitable work and voluntary hospitals and medical care in particular.
It was awarded to Christians of noble blood in both sexes who had rendered meritorious service worthy of some type of recognition while serving in the hospitals of the Teutonic Order.
This armband was likely used by a holder of the Marian Cross while on volunteer duty.............
