    Mothers Cross Comparision

Merry Christmas Eve everyone. It is the holiday season and I am sure we are all thinking about our Mothers.

This morning I was going through my Mothers Crosses and I came across a mutt. I am pretty sure this one is fake but would like your feelings.

    My concerns

    - The enamel is not translucent and you can not see pitting in the background on the arms of the cross

    - The background on the lettering appears to be pitted. I haven't seen this on any known examples of moine

    - The lettering on back seems a little rough and thicker than my others...

Perhaps I am have an anomaly but looking for inputs..

    Thank you,
    Scott

The suspect one on right.. Notice the pitting behind the lettering and no translucence on the arms of the cross

          Hi Scott,

Good observations but I think it's a good one. I'm no Mother's Cross expert but the quality looks better than any of the FEW fakes that I've seen.

We'll see what the experts say,
          Mike

Scott, the lettering does look a little "rough. You should post it in the Political and Civil Org. forum, you might get a better response.

              Hi Mike,

              Merry Christmas!

thank you for the note and I appreciate your insight... I guess perhaps I have an anomaly.

              Thank you,

Thank you Ralph... good advices.. I wasn't sure where to post this thread. I was split on what you said and posting in the official "cross" area.. lol

                Thank you,
                Scott

                  Hi scott!

I have checked with my examples and here are my conclusions from this:

-some of mine have a slightly pitted finished background, but yours looks a bit "heavier pitted".
-The lettering of the reverse looks very crude on your example as do the overall piece.( all of mine has a very clear inscription on the reverse)
-The enamel varies a lot from very deep and pebbeled, to almost flat( in my collection)but none of mine are completely flat.
(-Also,the whole piece looks somewhat thicker and possibly bigger than the other ones you display. Correct?)

It may be a late example or just a specific maker, but none of the ones I have show these "crude" characteristics. So if I were offered this, I wouldn't buy.
But as Mike said, the fakes I've seen are not this good, so I'm not saying that it's 100% fake. Only a bit suspicious :P

I hope that someone with more experience will come to your aid soon!

                  regards,
                  Alex

                    Hello Scott,

I share the same concerns that you mentioned at the start of this thread. In addition, the swastika looks a bit too small and the swastika disc has been applied off center. There is just too much about this example that does not look right, IMO.

                    Best regards,
                    Tom

Even though original Mother Crosses are common and easily obtainable, it is important to scrutinize them with the same vigilance that one would use when examining a much scarcer medal or badge. There are some very convincing fake Mother Crosses out there and you will get fooled if you let your guard down. The fakers of these crosses are able to pass them off because they know most collectors will take a quick glance and assume it to be real because it is a common item. A clever counterfeiter will fake five-dollar bills rather than fifty or hundred-dollar bills. A five will be accepted without question, but a fifty or hundred will attract attention and be scrutinized. Check out the fake Bronze Mother Cross shown in post number 7 & 8 of the following thread:

                        Hi Scott,

i (still) realise it's not the smartest move to reply now, because i've had two bottles of wine due to Christmas dinner, but from what i think to see and understand at the moent by the comparison this is a good cross!

Can you please take a better close up of the blue parts, i think th people who doubt it will be sure then?

many people forget there were MANY makers of motherscrosses, the pattern of the underlying blue parts is not (as some say!) a always "right" law, many types of different blue pattern types exist, as well as many differnt types of the central disc with the swastika in it. I like the cross so far from these pics and think i have a similar good one at home!

please post some close ups, merry christmas to you and your family!

                        best regards,
                        Gaston

Thank you very much Gaston for the input. It certainly sounds like you are enjoying the holidays. I hope you like my magnified close up. I know it looks sloppy but its the best I can do with the camera I own...

                          Merry Christmas to you!!!!

                            Tom,

Thank you for the response as well.. I agree.. if one was counterfeiting nickel and diming could prove to be fruitful.

Thank you and Merry Christmas. Scott

                              Greetings to all!
In my opinion, on this cross something is difficult to tell of 100 %...
I for myself wouldn't began to buy it.
It was not pleasant to me:
1 - the right beam - metal on edge is above rumpled, but enamel whole. If metal on the brink of a beam is rumpled by manufacture this cross anybody hasn't let out for rewarding. And if later - enamel has to deteriorate.
2 - the center has white enamel with dark stains from time as on crosses of the fireman, and on white enamel on beams there is no dark stain.
3 - opaque dark blue enamel, still it looks roughly on the surface. It is not visible drawing under enamel. But it can be feature of the manufacturer.
4 - an inscription behind not usual, too rough. The impression is made that it is copied from a miniature of manufacture of Dojmera. On the big crosses of a letter more graceful. But it can be feature of the manufacturer.
It only my opinion - I hope it to you than or will help.
                              Yours faithfully Konstantin.
