Actually the Panther has continued to be the mascot of the Bereitschaftspolizei. The old Bepo sport shirt patch bore the same logo, and the current verbandsabzeichen (pocket badges) also feature the sitting black panther.

As far as the use of Land versus Landes: Landes was used from 1919-1935. Following WWII, when more emphasis was put on the decentralized police forces, the term Land was used for the "state" police patrol while Gemeinde and Stadt Polizei titles which were for municpal. In 1972, after all the municipal police were merged into the state police, the term Landes was reinstituted until 1976

I also believe the panther is featured as a statue at the Bepo training barracks.

As far as the names underneath: Hollering / Waltner ? Surnames for award winners?

Thanks for reminding me Andrew. I had not looked closely at Radecke's Vol 3 to see the Bavarian B.P.A. button-hanger ID with the black panther. So the post WWII Bavarian Bereitschaft Polizei continued the use of the black panther started with the pre-war Landespolizei. I wonder if it had to do wtih their being awarded the traditions of German police of the colony of Togo in 1926. So the use of Landespolizei and the panther indicate pre-war use of that ski badge.

Excellent information. Thanks to all that posted here. I will have to pick up Joe's article when I get back to the States. Sounds like another excellent edition to the contributions that he has already made to our understanding of the German Police.
