Nice picture although a tough angle to view the ribbon bar. Are you able to get any more detail from a close up shot on the ribbon bar? I'd say he is likely to be Schupo. Might want to try a wanted posting for a cockade in the estand or search ebay.

      Hello,

The dark color piping is hard to distinguish in this photo. Looks like it could be a burgundy red to me which would make him a member of the Gemeindenpolizei, or small town municipal police. As Dave says though, it's a good bet that it is a shade of Schutzpolizei green, as these were the most numerous cops. Hard
to say for sure. The uniforms were basically the same for all branches, only the piping color changed

The medals look like "flower wars" commemoratives, but that isn't really my forte.

      Sorry can't help more.

I agree, the ribbons look to be the Austria Annex and the Czech medal.

          Here you go.

Here is a photo of the insignia of the 4 main branches, in roughly the same black and white color depth as your photo. You guess which color matches the closest

From left to right: Feuerwehr, Shupo, Gendarme, Gempo......a really tough call

Way too much time! Interesting measure, although there are so many other variable such as angle, lighting, shading, etc. make it impossible to be exact. My thought was that the darkness of the visor band & collar may eliminate Gendarmerie and at the point of the collar the piping appears a touch lighter so I thought possibly green, although it could also be carmine. We definitely see a greater number of Schupo related photos and if he is in fact wearing Annex. ribbons then I would think this would further support a guess of Schupo.

Of course your logic is right on. I must vote Shupo as well.

                    Ken,

Schupo is the shortened period term for the Schutzpolizei. These are mostly regular municipal police but they also made up the bulk of the police who were on active service in occupied territory and the combat police regiments / brigades. These guys had green piping and I agree with the others that this is probably what your guy in the photo is. The largest branch of the German police force. If we could see the eagle we would know more as some had district names and other distinguishing features. The occupation medals on the ribbon bar tend to support this educated guess.

                        Dear Ken,

Any number of dealers have the national colors "roundel" or cockade for around $10-15 on their sites. They show up on e-bay as well.

                        Regards,

Just found this thread. The photo came from my old photo collection. Always nice to see some old things from your collection again! Did you manage to find that cockade Ken? If so, did you make a display with that photo?

                          Cheers
