Is this Esso gas station in Germany?

Any idea what country this photo was taken? Did Esso operate in Germany during the Third Reich? Thanks

That looks like an American gas station... I cant imagine why a German gas station would use English words.

It could be that a pre-war sailor was on leave in a US port town.

I do not think so as he is wearing a pistol....a German sailor on leave in the US would not do so. Also the cap tally looks very much like "Kriegsmarine" which excludes the US theory.
Channel Islands would use the English term "service-station".

The correct French expression is reverse of the English and is "station-service" as mentioned by Bern and shown in the photo.

So France (or Belgium) is IMHO right.

French language is also widely used and is common in the Channel Islands. "Station-Service" was used in Jersey and Guernsey. I lived there for a short time in 1968. Therefore, the Channel Islands cannot be ruled out.

your are absolutely right ! I forgot the french connection and even that they spoke officially french on some islands until the late 40ties.
