Memorial Card & Photos to Ju87 Stuka Pilot Directly Involved in Victoria Cross Action

    Hi all,

I got this card and photos at the weekend. My friend in Berlin does clearances and we took some boxes to his house that he'd just got in a clearance and went through them and found these.

I've done a lot of research and Lt Schwarze was involved in the raid on Portland Harbour and on HMS Foylebank on 04/07/40 on the first day of Kanalkampf. He was in the only aircraft lost that day and according to a first hand testimony he was the pilot who bombed Jack Foreman V.C (and subsequently killed him with machine gun fire) and he was shot down by Jack Foreman V.C so directly involved in a Victoria Cross action.

I'm back in Berlin in 2 weeks and I hope my friend has found some additional paperwork as we were very rushed looking through the other day.

It's probably the most interesting piece of paperwork that I've found.

    Regards,

    Joe

Very interesting page 2 of first hand account. States that the Stuka had previously bombed Jack Foreman Mantle VC and that he was tracking him, cursing and swearing at him whilst unjamming his AA gun and fired upon Lt Schwarze's Stuka as he dived again killing Lt Schwarze and being killed himself at the same time.

I know it's Wikipedia but it is referenced. It shows Lt Schwarze by name:

                      Hi Ian,

Thanks for the input. I have that data but a little more detailed on the 4th link:

                      1940-07-04, 7./St.G 51, Ju 87B, Kanalküste, Flächenbruch vermutlich infolge Flakbeschuß. Bruch 100 %.
                      FF Lt Schwarze, Wilhelm, tot
                      BF Uffz Dörflinger, Julius, tot
Schwarze mit Fallschirm abgesprungen, aber der Schirm öffnete nicht.

On the Volksbund.de it confirms Cherbourg as the place of departure and Portland as the destination and presumes he was lost "between" those points.

Other sources confirm that he was the only loss on that day. It's a real shame the Werk Nummer isn't present.

This is interesting, it seems they were previously shot down by Hurricanes over France from 151 squadron but had both bailed out on that occasion and had survived.

"9./StG51 Junkers Ju87B-1. Shot down by Hurricanes of No.151 Squadron in combat north-east of Landrecies and reported crashed near Liniers 10.30 a.m. Possibly that attacked by P/O Hamar. FF Lt Wilhelm Schwarze and BF Uffz Julius Dörflinger believed baled out and both rescued unhurt. Aircraft 100% write-off"
