Alter Fritz

The remains of Alter Fritz, first vehicle of 703 sIG Kp (2.Pz Div.) in Arras.

I've located the pic thanks to the water tower, and Google Earth.
But what was doing there, out of the route of 2.PzDiv.?

I wonder how effective these were and what roles they played. Infantry support or something like that? It looks like a pretty clumsy and thrown together little machine!

Thanks Alan. Don't have the Podzun-Palas book, but the Dörfler, by Franz Steinzer, I think they're similar. It has a plan with the route of the 2.PD in France, but between Saint Quentin and Doulles, is an unnamed town, possibly Bapaume. Arras is at its north, nearly 40 km. The attack of french and British against the 5.PD and 7.PD started from Arras, the town wasn't occupied by the germans until after the counterattacks, when the 2.PD was near Boulogne.
Also, after Dunquerke, the 2.PD moved to Hirson to start again the attack on France, and may have crossed Arras, but from West to East, but the vehicle is facing the water tower, that is, the West.
Some pics are known from Alter Fritz with C vehicle from 10.PD moving through France. Perhaps both vehicles had lost its units and moved on the rearguard. A fortuite explosion may have destroyed it, not a war action.

It's a 47mm czech antitank gun on a Renault chassis
4,7 cm PaK(t) auf Panzer 35R(f)

and this (is it a marder III?) not very clear

I would say that it is something like "11" - vehicle number - on the gun shield.

It's "Moritz", check rope fastening on the hull roof in front side. "Max" havent this fastening.
