    Hi Aussie Jason!

Here is a link that answers your question about zippers
    http://inventors.about.com/library/weekly/aa082497.htm

In short the zipper as we know it today was invented in 1917 by a swede-born canadian imigrant and was first used on child cloaths in 1930 and in 1937 it beat the button.

Don´t throw away your fake WB´s! Get in touch with me.
I collect them for reference purposes for the benefit of the hobby (for the right "fake" price of course).

Is this for real or what, surely they would not have been able to wear such undegarments.

        Panzer shirts

I've seen plenty of period photographs with the panzer soldier wearing some sort of plaid shirt under his wrapper. I always wondered about it. Probably some sort of fashion statement at the time I'd assume. Anybody know?

If those of you who have the link are nervous about competition, could someone be so kind as to email me the image that's on the auction. I'd like to have a copy of that photograph for my files, but I'd prefer to have a copy without a big blue circle.

          Thanks,

I dont believe the auction is active anymore. The price went above glass cieling last time I checked. I searched for it to post here with no luck. That particular seller always uses the rubber bands on the fotos when posting images and he usually has very good images as well. Nice Arty crusher on ebay.de right now too.

While there is photographic evidence to support the plaid shirt and the zipper the whole setup looks very suspicious to me. Yes, it was a stylish thing to wear civilian underclothes beneath the uniform particularly for panzer crews. Peiper was fotographed wearing a civilian turtleneck sweater under his wrapper so even the SS were not immune you see. While it is certain pecular things did happen and veterans did do weird things in terms of uniform/insignia wear (double cuff titles) this portraitfoto does not sit right with my gut. I am not the only one to catch it.

Here is another for one on ebay.de where they appear to be wearing civilian undershirt. Both panzermen. Ba-re always has nice stuff too.

The SS1 Deutschland tab was in use to the mid-1940 and then this LSSAH slip on. Furthermore the Close Combat Clasp was instituted in late 1942.
                And then the shirts...

This together makes me think it´s a post war photo!
The one thing that strikes me is the complete abscence of a background, and anything in the background that might date the photo. How common are photos like this with a plain, featureless background?

                  Hey Landsknechte,

I played around on my computer and edited the blue circle out.

                      Hello,

I have several original period portrait photos of various non issue undershirts clearly show them being worn. The background is fine. There is nothing wrong as to when this picture was taken...during the war. The only question would be if it is a new copy now coming on the market. Even the best dealers have been fooled with the better copies.

                      Regards
