Yep, everything seems to fit.

Can anyone offer any ideas on this one? He is a Hauptmann of the Berlin Wachtbataillon (Grossdeutschland) and therefore I understand likely a Knight's Cross holder. Dated August 1944.

If you can assist with a few of the letters you might get me a kick start. Perhaps starts "S" and ends "z?"

Perhaps it ends in --witz.

Thanks for that. I have looked at the register of Ritterkreuztraeger under intial letters S, C and H with a "witz" suffix. No luck. If we ascertain the first letter it will narrow it down.

I saw a post on AHF that noted that all officers in the Wachbataillon held the Knight's Cross - hope that is true.
