    Need help with U-boat ID

Hello all....I just picked up this photo recently. I love it...check out the ice on the boat and the banners/flags from bow to aft. The seller claimed it was of U-704 because he picked it up from a lot from Wilhelm Heinrich...he was a crew member on U-704. Well, U-704 was a Type VIIC and the boat in the photo is obviously a Type IXB...(right?)...As far as I know, there were only 14 IXBs made and most of them were pretty famous. Maybe Heinrich photographed this boat while U-704 was in another base?

Also, check out the conning tower...It looks like maybe there was a collision?

Anyone have any idea what port they are in? Looks like Northern Germany in winter somewhere.

I hope someone can help me ID this boat. I can't make out any markings on the tower..........any and all input would be most appreciated!

    Vielen dank!

Yeah great!...Over 81 views of this photo and not one comment. I am sorry guys but that is really lame!

Are you all just copying my photo instead? I had relied on experts on this site to help and it's just not happening.

I appreciated your willingness to let us see the photo. It is a very interesting one, with the snow and ice, and things like the cranes in the port in the background.
I'm not a submarine specialist so can't comment on the identity, but I like seeing a good photo.

As for any copying with nefarious intent.... not from me.

Just a suggestion, I see that the photo is posted at 72dpi. If it is possible to re-scan the conning tower area at a much higher resolution- at least 300dpi and maybe even more if your scanner is capable of it and there is that much detail in the print....
....and share that higher resolution here... it might help with the identity. Just the conning tower area.

Thanks Randy.....I wish the other 150 people who looked would give me some feedback as well.

WOW... Maybe the 81 are like me. I can't tell you anything about the photo you already don't know and since I can't I will look forward to someone who does. Not clutter your thread with comments that are the opposite of what you requested.

Would you rather have 150 replies saying I have no idea or 150 views that it has at least been seen by someone.

I would say they have not replied simply as they have no idea. I don't either, however was interested to see what your post was about especially when I have docs to one of the commanders of U-704.

If it is a type IXB as you mention you might be able to find out more here: http://uboat.net/types/ixb.htm

Thanks for the link Ian. I was hoping someone could at least provide me with some clues as to where the photo was taken, which type of boat, etc and from that I might get closer to an ID. There is alot of folks on this site with great knowledge and have seen much more militaria than I have. Awhile back someone helped me ID a photo of Nico Clausen which I totally appreciate.

Hopefully someone will come along with some info. Even some thoughts on where the photo may have been taken would be really helpful.

              Thanks again.

Wow...I guess that now I would rather have 270 replies stating that they know absolutely nothing about the photo and have nothing to offer.....Yeah....That's exactly what I want.

                Thanks everyone.

I'm sorry...but at this point I think this is just not right....trying to be nice here.

I see people asking for research help on this site all the time. I always try to help when I can. 270 looks is alot to get without 1 person saying a damn thing except complaining about my posts pertaining to the lack of comments.

                Whatever...........

                Administrator...Please remove this entire thread.....Thanks.

Yeah, it's not right if you think other forum members here as a GOD who can answer all of your questions! I see other posts without comment and there's seems nothing wrong with that, except this

I don't think other forum members are God but I do think that maybe they are smarter than people like you who can offer some helpful insight instead of someone who can't offer anything other than some worthless critical comment that has nothing to do with the photo.

It is entirely possible that there is not enough visible information in this image to identify the specific U-boat.

I would think there is enough information, however, to identify the port.

Thanks Randy...I totally agree and that would be so helpful in my work to id this boat.........

I would do the same for someone else. I thought that was what this forum was for...sharing information.

You expect someone knows....It would appear that no one does, however the tone of your posts might stop anyone who does know replying anyway.
Some posts get a hell of a lot of views before someone answers....however...personally I would have posted this on one of the U-Boat forums.

                            building lettering

If you look at the last row of submariners on the left,, a little further left of them
straight back to the peak of the bldg., there is the lettering( "L I .......). that's the
best I can make of it. Anyone else see the full title?

                              A new theory

All of the IXBs were made by AG Weser of Bremen. They all served with the 2nd U-flotille out of Wilhemshaven. I mentioned in another post that I bought the photo from a guy who bought a grouping from Wilhelm Heinrich, a crewmember aboard U-704. For a time, U-704 served with the 23rd Flotille out of Danzig (9/43-7/44). The only IXB that I could find that could have been in the same place with u-704 at anytime during the war was U-108, which served with the 8th U-Flottille as a training boat between 9/43-4/44.

It is a coincidence, but the boat in the photo could be U-108 and Danzig certainly gets pretty cold. I think all those flags were flown by training crews after thier graduating voyage, although not quite sure about that.

Now I need to find out if Heinrich was with U-704 when she was in Danzig!

                              History is awesome!!!
