        Hi Bill,

Actually I do have some photos of POW's in the Bitter Lakes camps.

          how did the GermanPOWs...

In many of these photos, the prisoners seem to have complete uniforms with accessories. How was this possible when many must have lost all but the clothes on their backs. Many thanks in advance,John Wilson

            Annelie,

You might not be able to post photos (not to exceed 700 x 750 pixels) unless you are a Association Member, if you cannot post the images you can send them to me via email (I will PM you with my email address) and I will post them for you. Regards - Bill

              John,

It's obvious by just looking at the photos that many soldiers became POW's with their uniforms and decorations & Awards but not all were that fortunate. If you look closely alot of the POW's are wearing either dyed British Battledress or American Uniforms marked PW. Many in the Canadian camps had their original uniforms and were able to wear their awards. You can sometimes see this in the early POW camps in the USA and the later POW camps in France. Bill

thanks for reply..I was looking at #457 with belts, over coats etc. I have also read that LW officers had their awards sent from Germany via the Red Cross exchange channels. I thought perhaps uniforms were sent also.

                  John,

That is a possibility that uniform items were sent via Red Cross but I personally never heard of it. I would think there would be some kind of limitation on what could be sent in a Red Cross parcel..other factors may have impacted on sending such items via Red Cross as well. such as economics/availability of such items to send to POWS. A majority of POWS had to make due with what they had or were able to supplement neccessary items from POW run Kantines (soap, toothbrushes, canned goods, cigaretes, etc.) Lets hear from other members of the forum what they know. Here is an interesting pic I just discovered hidden away in my collection. A French run German POW Camp with what looks like the French staff that includes two civilian and two Military Chaplains/Priests. German POW's in the background.

Some new POW photos have arrived. These photos are of a American run German POW Stockade Labor Service Group I believe to be in or around Antwerp, Belgium.
