    Unusual Panzer II modification

This just sold on Ebay for EUR 101. I've never seen this modification before. Judging by the number "J4", it may be a repair vehicle ("J" = Instandsetzung, repair or maintenance).

Very interesting... (I wasn't aware of the auction, I will really miss this )

I ageee Jason, it must be a recovery tank from the workshop company.
And it has Kugelblende 50 installed! I don't think it has 50mm frontal armor, so some adjustment must have taken place.

      Hi Akira,

There's still one more shot of this vehicle for sale from the same seller:

It's not as good as the first one, however.

By the way, Akira, did you see the great pic buried in a thread in the Wehrpass section? Check out post #1235 on this link:

I'm sure you'll find the photo really interesting!

I know, but "J" is often used on vehicles to denote Instandsetzung. See the following links:

Thank you for the head-up! REALLY INTERESTING!

I'll leave the Bergepanzer II photo to the winner... They should be kept as a group!

Historically, "J" started as a glyph variation of "I". Alphabets have evolved a lot during the history... Standards like ASCII have only a very short history!

That is a capitla I in German and as has been stated it was used to designate a repair vehicle.

The writing on the back reads:
                    4.1.44
                    Kolchos b[ei] Bogdanovka
                    (Zug Lt. L...)

Perhaps the location can help to identify the unit.

                      trebes, I have checked against an issue list for the SdKfz 131 (incomplete sadly) to see which units could have had those vehicles in January 1944, then in Lexikon der Wehrmacht to see where thos units were at that time. It actually comes down to just the six divisions;

17 Inf Div which was near Nikopol
306 Inf Div also near Nikopol
                      8 PD near Zhtomir
                      13 PD near Kriwoi Rog
                      16 PD near Bobruisk
                      19 PD near Zhtomir.

I'm afraid that other than believing that Zhtomir would be too far north I don't knowUkrainian geography well enough to get any closer than this.
