The newspaper clipping describes bitter battles between the soviets and mixed groups of Heer and SS units. The Soviets came from north, south, east, but the German units inflicted heavy casualties in a successful withdrawal maneuver under command of General der Panzertruppen Hube.

The last two negatives were taken in Italy. Both now rest in the large German cemetery at Cassino. Luckily the location of Salzmann's death is given as Cupello, which is close to the Adriatic coast.

The tank is a Panzer IV.

I've inverted the colours for you.

Judging by the unit emblems, I'd say this is 16. Panzer-Division. They certainly wanted to brand this motorcycle... I see 3 emblems. Unfortunately number plates tell us very little. There is a "K" painted on the fender, possibly for "Kleist" (indicating the photo might show 1942) but then again it could be the first initial of an officer in 16.Pz.Div.

The shield on the sidecar is definitely unusual. I feel like I've seen it somewhere before but I need to check.

                            VERY interesting photos.

The architecture of the buildings in the panzer photo look French or Italian, but I stand to be corrected.

Awesome find indeed! Very cool. I think its great that you found this in Maine too. I lived there for a while and never came close to finding anything like this!
And yes, the biks has the emblems of 16. Panzer Division for sure! They made that perfectly clear! haha Incredible grouping to come from a mapcase.....love it! It would be great if you would post any other info you get from the diary entries...

Regarding the list of Generalobersten (pic. 20), are the dates listed their dates of death, if so they are all very post war!
