Probably, it is interesting to someone. Couple of combinations not conforming to the "then & now" standard.
To often tourists visiting Mamayev Kurgan show the German pillbox at the next top. I warn, waste no time. Pillbox is constructed in 1964 on a place of the former defensive strengthenings. But in the steppe, 10-20 kilometers, from Stalingrad still remained traces of real events.

    Stalingrad pillbox.

Antitank ditch started building in 1941. Thousand inhabitants Stalingrad were involved. But, weren't in time. The German armies went round a ditch, without problems.
Antitank ditch didn't remain. But if to look for, you will find.
In these parts there are no excursions.

          A great thread !!!

Skorin, if you have a look at Jason Mark's superlative book " Angriff, The German attack on Stalingrad in Photos" you will find a huge amount of photos, many in the city itself. Maybe you could have a look for some of the same locations now ?

          All the best

As far as I know, he's the only person in Volgograd who owns a copy of "Angriff".

                    Amazing

I just looked through this entire thread--and had to come back just to say thank you so much for presenting this. That photo of the officer looking skyward has been
unforgettably etched in some of our memories--and it is beyond amazement the building concerned is still there! The shots of the open steppe show just how eternal the landscape can sometimes be--right down to the ravines and washouts! It is
profound how the then-and-now shots are interspersed with the magic detail of
the "strange mushroom" photo, and the vehicle wreckage. Your presentation speaks
                    louder than words.
